Hornchurch District Cubs Archery
Well done to the Jupiter pack who won the under 11 Archery trophy. Fourth position in the Under 9’s and under 10’s. 14 Cub packs attended the Competition with 88 Cubs taking part.
Chief Scout Silver & Bronze Awards

Dear Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Parents and Leaders / Exec Members
Thanks to everyone who came along to our recent Scouts Own. Each year the 8th Hornchurch Scout Group holds a Group Scout’s Own. This is one of only a small handful of occasions when the whole Group gets together and hence is a great opportunity for your child to see the wider Scout Group they are a member of.
A Scout’s Own is a short church service which is run by the leaders and involves the various Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of the 8th Hornchurch Scout Group and is held each year to commemorate the birthday of our Founder Lord Baden Powell. BP was born on 22nd February 1857.
Particular thanks to Mao who ran the Scouts Own this year with the assistance of many of our young members and focused on what can be achieved through team work. The reading of the story of George Washington was particularly illuminating and a lesson to us all at times – see below.
The reading told the story of a rider on horseback, who many years ago, came across a squad of soldiers who were trying to move a heavy piece of timber.
A corporal stood by, giving lordly orders to “Heave.”
But the piece of timber was too heavy for the squad.
“Why don’t you help them?” asked the quiet man on the horse, addressing the important corporal.
“Me? Why, I’m a corporal sir!”
Dismounting, the stranger carefully took his place with the soldiers.
“Now, all together boys – heave!” he said. And the big piece of timber slid into place.
The stranger mounted his horse and addressed the corporal. “The next time you have a piece of timber for your men to handle, corporal, send for your commander-in-chief.”
The horseman was George Washington, the first American President.
Swimming Gala Results
An update on the very successful recent fundraising event.
Sponsorship money collected to date has been £630 across all nine sections which is truly excellent. If any more money comes in please pass it on to either Davied or myself.
This means that in total we raised £1,053.50 with the food costing £246.93 thus net fundraising proceeds of £806.57 which I am very pleased about.
Thanks all for your assistance and in particular a very big thank you to the Fundraising Team on a great first event.
Explorer D of E Presentations
Just recently I was honoured to be invited to the inaugural Hornchurch Scout District Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award evening. During the evening we heard from a number of the recipients of this award and also saw a photo montage of their expedition weekends. The presentations themselves were made by Paul Trayler the County Commissioner for Greater London North East who recounted the skills and confidence his own son had gained from taking part in Scouting and the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme such that he has followed his dreams and now works in Japan, a role Paul doubted he would have taken up without the confidence gained early on in life.
It was very pleasing to see two recipients from 8th Hornchurch. Lauren Tangye carried out her service assisting with one of our Beaver Colonies and Rhys Easman who has progressed through the whole of the Group and has just become a Young Leader and Explorer Scout having reached the age of 14. Congratulations to them both on achieving their Bronze Award and good luck as they move onto their Silver Award.
I would encourage all Scouts as you reach your 14th birthday to register for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and combine this with your Scout achievement awards.

IMPORTANT FUNDRAISING INFORMATION
I just wanted to share an update with you regarding the main source of fundraising for your Scout Group – GIFT AID.
Having just completed the Gift Aid submissions for the past two years I can confirm that as a result of missing parental Gift Aid forms we have lost out on important fundraising to the tune of
2014/15 year – £647.50
2015 /16 year – £1,108.75
This is a huge amount of money for the Group to not be able to reclaim. If you are approached by your section leader / section treasurer to complete a Gift Aid form please can you do so. In this way we can keep your subscriptions as low as possible. If we continue to lose out on valuable Gift Aid contributions from HMRC we will need to look at other ways of funding the many activities and equipment requirements of your child’s Scout Group.
